πŸŽ€ The Doll That Knows What Month You Were Born

There was a moment in the 1980s when the collectible doll became something more than a toy. It became a gesture. A way of saying: I know what month you came into the world, and I found the thing made specifically for that month, and I put it in your hands as proof that your birthday mattered. The Russ Berrie Months to Remember series was built entirely around that idea. Twelve dolls, twelve months, twelve ways to say: this one is yours. πŸŽ€

This is the August doll. She stands on her white display stand in the pink Victorian dress and lace apron she was made with. The hang tag β€” "Months to Remember | Porcelain Collectible Dolls | August" β€” is still pinned to her dress with the original safety pin. She has long golden hair in braids, a pink bonnet, brown boots, and the careful painted face that Russ Berrie put on every piece in this line. She is, forty-something years after she was made, exactly what she was designed to be: a keepsake.

🏭 Russ Berrie & Company β€” The Oakland, NJ Gift Empire

Russell Berrie started his company in 1963 out of his car. He was a salesman who believed that the right stuffed animal or the right small gift could communicate something that words sometimes couldn't, and he built a company around that conviction. By the time Russ Berrie and Company went public in 1984, it was one of the most recognizable names in the American gift trade. 🧸

The Months to Remember series was one of the company's signature collectible lines. Each doll in the series was made to represent one of the twelve months, dressed in the fashion of a different era, constructed with a porcelain face, hands, and feet on a soft fabric body. Style 1592 β€” the number on the box of this doll β€” is the earlier, more elaborate version of the August doll. The pink Victorian dress with its white lace apron overlay, the ruffled collar, the bonnet, the boots. The construction details are more intricate than the later simplified versions. πŸŽ€

🌸 August β€” The Birth Month

August is the month of peridot and gladiolus. The birthstone is a warm pale green β€” one of the few gemstones formed not in the earth's crust but in the mantle below, carried up by volcanic activity from miles beneath the surface. Ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun." The birth flower is the gladiolus, named from the Latin for sword β€” gladius β€” meaning strength of character, faithfulness, integrity. August also contains both Leo and Virgo: the confidence of summer and the precision of early autumn in equal measure. 🌸

🏑 The 1980s Collectible Moment

The 1980s were the golden decade of the American collectible. The Bradford Exchange. The Franklin Mint. Norman Rockwell figurines. Russ Berrie's Months to Remember dolls were part of this broader cultural moment β€” sold in gift shops and department stores, displayed in glass-front cases and on piano tops beside family photographs. They became the kind of thing that moved from one generation to the next not because anyone planned it but because they were too particular to discard. This is the August one β€” someone's August, and August meant something specific to somebody. πŸŽ€

Didn't fit my narrow feet, but still excellent shoes at a great low price
Size: 11, Color: A Black
These are some of the lightest shoes I've ever seen, but the build quality appears to be excellent. They're tongue-less, like slip-ons, but unlike some, you can adjust the tightness with the laces. The body of the shoe is a mesh-like fabric, which allows good breathability and overall comfort, and the soles are a molded rubbery material with nice treads for grip. I've been wearing a name-brand shoe made very similarly for a couple of years, and these are a very good likeness of them, at a much lower price. I like them because of the light weight and the fabric, which make them feel almost like you're barefoot. Unfortunately for me, I have narrow feet, and these fit more like a D width shoe, with more room in the toe box than I can handle. I'm returning them for that reason. For people with "normal" feet, these make really nice, stylish and comfortable shoes. I don't know how well they would hold up to sports or running, but for walking and day-to-day wear, they're great. I suppose I could grade them down because they don't fit my feet, but I find lots of shoes don't, and many makers use D width as the default for men's shoes. So I'm still rating them as 5 stars.

In a pinch they're worth it.
Size: 12, Color: D Grey
I got the dark gray color. They came exactly as pictured and are decently comfortable but as far as packaging it's very poor. They come in a small plastic bag all squished and deformed so you have to wear them a few times before they take shape again. For the price it's a great buy for some generic work shoes or something, the bottom tread doesn't last long at all though if you're expecting them to last a long time as it will be gone in a week or two if you wear them frequently. Buy them if you don't feel like spending a lot of money on shoes but want a new pair cheap.

Ladies, don't be afraid. Buy 'em. Trust me
Size: 9.5, Color: A Black
My elderly mother adores these. She had to have breathable awesome shoes for post-surgery and these fit the bill (and her feet!) So i got some for me. Whoa. Comfort! And I love the slip-on ease, b/c sometimes I just need to go, go, and go some more. Love them in black, haven't had long enough for durability, but helpful for my mom in her physical therapy and they're holding up to the worst she can do to them.

Good overall shoe, great for basic needs
Size: 12, Color: A Black
These are nice shoes. I put $40 arch support insoles in mine, so I like them even more, but they were fairly comfortable even without. They fit well, though slightly large, and seem to hold up well. No real complaints, though made a bit cheaply.

Great walking shoes
Size: 11, Color: All Black
A very comfortable walking shoe that’s well made and looks like it’s going to hold up well for everyday wear. Lightweight indeed and probably doesn’t require much cleaning. Easy to get on and off without much stress though.
