The 'Hilda' Heather brings a touch of bright, long-lasting colour to autumn scenes with its unique foliage and tireless bloom. A member of the award-winning Garden Girls® series, it adorns itself with brilliant lilac-pink flower buds that refuse to open. This distinctive trait gives them exceptional resistance to bad weather and a colour that persists from the end of summer until the first snows. Its magnificent silvery-grey foliage offers a superb contrast, adding another dimension of colour and texture to its beauty.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: Fine, evergreen foliage in a beautiful silvery-grey shade, which offers a striking contrast with the pink flowers and remains decorative all year.
  • Flowering: As a "bud-bloomer," its long spikes are covered in bright lilac-pink buds that remain closed. This ensures a spectacular and very long-lasting colour display from August to November.
  • Light: Requires full sun to maintain its silvery foliage colour and ensure dense flowering.
  • Habit: Adopts an upright, compact, and bushy habit, forming a very neat little plant cushion.
  • Growth: Slow-growing, it reaches a mature size of 30 to 50 cm (12-20 in) in height and width.
  • Soil: Essential: requires acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), poor, sandy, and above all, perfectly drained soil. It absolutely cannot tolerate heavy, clay, or alkaline soils.
  • Temperature: Hardy in Zone 5. Its survival in the ground in many parts of Canada is highly dependent on adequate winter protection, such as a consistent snow cover or a mulch of conifer boughs.
  • Resistance: Very resistant to White-tailed deer. The closed flower buds stand up admirably to wind and rain.

Use

  • Types of Use: Perfect in fall containers where its silvery foliage and pink flowers work wonders. Ideal in window boxes, rock gardens, acidic borders, or in groups. Often used as a seasonal annual for its prolonged fall colour.
  • Decorative Advantages: Provides a delicate texture and a refined colour combination (pink and silver) at a season when the garden is winding down. It pairs beautifully with asters, grasses, and other fall stars.

Care

  • Watering: Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, but without ever waterlogging the soil. Good drainage is crucial.
  • Fertilization: Requires very little fertilization. If necessary, use a low-dose fertilizer for acid-loving plants in the spring.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring, just below the previous year's flower spikes, to maintain a compact shape. Avoid cutting into old wood.
  • Planting: Incorporate soil for acid-loving plants (heather/rhododendron soil) or peat moss when planting to ensure an adequate pH.
  • Winter Protection: For in-ground planting, protect the shrub from drying winter winds with a mulch of conifer boughs. A good snow cover is its best insulator.

The most engaging interactive toy for my Border Collie
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
My Border Collie is not a big ball player. He prefers tug type games and actually gives me a look like, “Are you stupid? I’m not going to keep bringing that to you if all you’re going to do is throw it away again!” after about the third time I throw a ball for him to fetch. However, I can only play tug so often and I need him to be entertained and engaged as much as possible. I got him a smaller, non-padded ball like this hoping he would like the interactive aspect of it. He did- he actually loved it! But it was loud, hard on his teeth, would come apart periodically, and he kept hitting the off button when playing with it. It drove me crazy. This one is so much better overall! The soft outer shell is not only easier on his teeth, but it is super resilient to biting and chewing. He actually likes to carry this thing around in his mouth while it’s bouncing and vibrating. The three modes give great flexibility for different kinds of play. His favorite is the most active mode: the ball reacts to touch and practically bounces itself across the floor when he touches it with his paw or mouth. I will point out that in one of the modes, I thought the battery wasn’t charged or there was a motor issue because it’s very subdued movement; however, it’s just set up as a low-key option. Be sure to check out each mode to see which works best for your dog at different times. I can’t say enough about this ball- I have been so pleasantly surprised by how much he loves it. The rechargeable feature is super convenient, it’s big enough to not get stuck under the couch, and it automatically shuts off based on whichever mode it’s set on. As the owner of a busy, super-smart dog who needs to be engaged in mental and physical activity, I think this all is worth every penny. In fact, I’m buying one for a friend who has a Border Collie pup with lots of energy to burn! I highly recommend this toy- it’s the most engaging toy I’ve found that Finn will play with on his own.

Not as Smart or Interactive as You Think it Will Be
Color: Blue
This is an honest review from a schnauzer owner who has has wanted this cheerble ball for their dog for more than one year. I finally bougI finally bought this toy and both me and my dog are disappointed. The settings are...i would say dog friendly as I'd assumed a dog ball would be. What I mean by that is, for example: the calm play setting is muuch too calm. Super light puffs of energy, like a battery is dying. And the playful setting is scary, alarmingly so. The intervals in between are too long. The ball does not bounce. So they just have settings all wrong. The size is good for a large dog only. Do not buy if you have a small to medium dog. I even think the material is okay. I've only had it for a few days so I can't even speak to how the material holds up. Really hoping to love this ball for my dog. It was not the distraction I was hoping it would be so I could work from home while my dog had fun. I'm hoping this can help someone else who's been pining over it. Essentially, it's a $35-$50 well made weighted ball that moves occasionally.

Great fun for our dogs!
Style: Original
My dogs can’t get enough of this very noisy ball. We have one outside and one in their playroom. It is very noisy. It is very hard. So, I’d say a room with fine furniture is not the place for it. Ours bang it around pretty good. Our boxer did split one, biting it. But, she’s a serious chewer! Our other dog carries it around sometimes but hasn’t been able to damage it yet. So, I’d say for most chewers it’s going to last a long time. It’s a great toy but in most households I’d say basement or outside. Again, it’s hard and did ding a few baseboards.

Superb!
Style: Original
My dog absolutely loves this ball. It's too big for him to fit all the way in his mouth, so it's held up pretty well and still makes the sounds.
